For the last ten years, I've been trying to find a suitable string player to join in on the recordings. Still not having found anyone a year ago, I was ready to take anyone who owns
a string instrument; six months ago, I would have been happy with
anyone who's ever seen a violin or a viola, so long as they hold it in a
way that looks convincing. And then something amazing happened and I got incredibly lucky.
Actually, we all got lucky since thanks to Bimbi's appearance on the
scene, you get to listen to what is hands down the best viola you've
ever heard in popular music. Apart from being technically brilliant, it's played with a deep musicality that is moving and uplifting to listen to.
The tracks sound beautiful as a result and I'm so happy that all of this worked out the way it did. And I'm glad I make albums so we can share this with you.
On its interesting journey through the musical ears of the UK, Germany and North America, the OH YES!! album - a "progressive rock / folk / rock / pop / experimental / alternative rock / indie rock / progressive folk / crossover" (whatever all these things are) album - has attracted a range of categorisations and labels that is simply baffling. Sometimes, even the labels themselves are baffling - I was recently referred to as a "comedy pop artist" in a radio show, something that'll take a while to live down (and incidentally, not something I'm actively trying to achieve).
Whatever
the previous albums were, things are much, much, much simpler this
time. What you are reading about here is a folk-rock album. Simple as that.
Fair enough, it does have a quirky progressive instrumental intro
(because I can) but otherwise, it's a consistent package of folk and
rock, so you know what to expect.
I hope you enjoy the music.
